Novel Review: Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

Assalamualaikum and Hi,

So, this book had taken most of my free time over the last week.  I did not remember where and when I buy this novel. It has been on the shelf for more than three years, I think.

I was totally in love with this book once I flip over the first page.
Though the author is not a famous one like Jody Piccoult etc, but she manages to bring me (at least) into the world she introduce in this novel.

Resuming old hobby: Novel The Lost and Forgotten Languages of Shanghai

Assalamualaikum,

Hari ni dah 22 September. Dah quarter three of Year 2014. Cepatnya masa berlalu.
Rasanya sejak jadi student balik, dah lama saya tinggalkan hobi membaca novel ni.
The last novel yang saya review (read Baca) ialah pada February 2012, iaitu the final month saya masih bergelar seorang pekerja sebelum berhenti kerja.
Novel tersebut saya pinjam from Nora (kawan rapat di tempat kerja lama) and bertajuk A Stolen Life .

Since jadi student balik, saya memang banyak beli novel .

Saya mulakan dengan novel The Lost and Forgotten Languages of Shanghai...

Worth spending for Baby Khalifah Series

Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah.

We now own this great Baby Khalifah Series (BKS).

I have been eyeing on this product since one and half year ago. To be honest, I got to know this product from mypermatahati.com when I join dropship program with them. They do sell this product. However, I think it is too advance for Ilyaas (since dia belum pon setahun lagi masa tu). But when Mommy Nadia introduce this in her blog, I don't give another thought anymore. Cepat-cepat I email her to order this BKS. Unfortunately, untuk first order masa tu dah penuh. So I wait for the second order. Tak tunggu lama pun. Once second order dibukak, Nadia terus email I tanya I nak ke tak.

After dah order one set, I cepat-cepat pulak fikir macam mana nak cari fund nak bayar Baby Khalifah Series ni. Mommy Nadia jual RM80 je. Tak mahal pon.. But being a mother tanpa pendapatan bulanan, membuatkan I mmg restricted sikit dari segi spending. I terfikir untuk jual my ring sling. So,I put it for sale dekat dalam group second hand item di fb. Syukur sgt, ada yang berminat. Ramai yg berminat. I jual cukup-cukup untuk bayar Baby Khalifah Series ni. I quickly bank in to Nadia, to make sure I did not spent the money for something else. I really really want this Baby Khalifah Series. Lepas dah bank in, email her back. Discuss about postage etc sebab masa tu dah nak dekat PRU13, afraid kalau pos nnt lambat dapat since I'm going back to Terengganu for one whole week. Last-last, we decided to meet up in Chendering, KT since Nadia pun balik mengundi kat Terengganu. Moment dapat box BKS ni, I terus passed it to Ilyaas yg duduk dalam kereta masa tu dengan cousin dia. Excited bukan main Ilyaas, tahu lah dia dapat mainan baru. Yes Ilyaas, umi beli ni untuk Ilyaas. Belajar sama dengan adik ye. Jaga elok-elok tau.

So these are the things yang ada dlm box BKS biru yang comel tu.

1. 6 Buku Activity [ My Family/ My First Adab/ My First Kalimah/ My First Arabic/ My First Iqra/ My First Solat]
2. 6 CDs  [ My Family/ My First Adab/ My First Kalimah/ My First Arabic/ My First Iqra/ My First Solat]
3. Flash Card containing waktu solat, kiblat dan aturan mengambil wudhu.
4. Colour Pencil
5. Bookmark
6. Car Sticker

It is an interactive  learning Cd. Jadi, mula-mula kita kena install dekat laptop/pc dulu. Installation ni amik masa dalam 3minit camtu. Jadi harap bersabar ye anak-anak sekalian. Btw, CD semuanya di-attach pada buku aktiviti ye. Jangan jadi mcm I, bila check dalam box BKS tu dah tak nampak CD, pastu gelabah ingtkan hilang ke masa Ilyaas dok main dalam kereta masa pick up from Nadia. Siap geledah kereta cari. RUPANYA ada kat BELAKANG BUKU laaaaa ...hehehehe funny me.

First topic yang saya intro pada Ilyaas ialah My First Solat.

Ilyaas excited sgt dgr Aisyah tu bg salam dekat dia.

Then kita tengok pulak CD My Family

Ilyaas kusyuk dengar cara mengambil wudhu. Memandangakan Ilyaas baru 2 tahun 2 bulan, tahap concentration dia masih susah nak di kawal. Tak lama dia fokus pada satu-satu aktiviti. Paling lama 15 minit.

Setiap page berwarna dan printed on a very good quality paper. Amazing sgt product tempatan tp kualiti sangat bagus. thumbs up Islamkids.com

Buku-buku aktiviti masih saya simpan. Saya sayang nak bagi Ilyaas main. Maklumlah, Ilyaas belum pandai menulis, not yet membaca. Sekadar A B C tu baru nak mula mengenal. Sayang kalau saya biar dia belek-belek buku ni, nnt dia terconteng, or terkoyak...aaaaa sedih.

Ok nak share pasal Flash Card from Baby Khalifah Series pulak. Sejujurnya, I rasa this is a very good quality flash cards. Memang tak sama mcm yg dijual dekat supermarkets or kedai buku even MPH.
First of all, kad ni menggunakan kertas cardboard yang sangat keras.

" umi, bukak bukak bukak"

Tapi (ayat standard), I tried to squeeze in some time. Biasanya bila dah golek-golek nak tidur, I show him this flash card.

Flash Cards from Baby Khalifah Series
Colourful dan penuh karakter kartun.

Dengan adanya flash card BKS ni jugak I started to introduce some basic islamic knowledge to my little girl, Imani. Tengok gambar kat bawah ni. Gambar first tu Imani tgh hold kad kiblah sambil tengok ayah dia tunjuk flash card lain. Gambar kedua tu pulak Imani tgh serabut mengantuk tapi si abang Ilyaas sibuk ajak bermain lagi. Ni gambar latest semalam baru snap. hehehe

Lepas dah purchase BKS ni, I baru tau pasal website www.islamkids.my
Pengeluar Product Baby Khalifah Series ni.

Oh ye, siapa-siapa nak dapatkan info lebih lanjut pasal product ni boleh contact I terus ye. I jual jugak this good product. Bukan tujuan nak dapat keuntungan, tapi to spread the good things.
Harga dia RM80 (pls add RM10 for postage).

Ni facebook page Baby Khalifah Series by Mommy Nadia.

Jemput like ye kawan-kawan dan sebar-sebarkan lah benda baik ni...

TQ sudi baca

Big Bad Wolf Sale 2012-my first experience

Alhamdulillah.

The place was very big. jalan dari one end ke another end boleh mengah ok. dah la kena usung buku yg nak beli tu.

My mil cakap mcm nak bukak nursery:P heheh,
mostly buku untuk Ilyaas dan adik(-adiknya).
Kena jaga semua buku ni elok-elok. Nak simpan dari generasi ke generasi.
Tinggi benor cita-cita saya.
Beli buku untuk diri sendiri, for my brothers, and hubby got his own selection as well

My advice bg sapa-sapa yg plan nak pegi BBW before dia end 23 Dec ni:-

1) Bawa  trolley (yg selalu nenek2 bawa pergi pasar), so that u don't have to carry the heavy books sepanjang proses memilih buku yg nak dibeli. Or at least, guna stroller anak-anak kita pon ok. Like us.

2) Kalau takde trolley, at least bawa shopping bag or bag pack. Boleh galas buku-buku tersebut sebelum dibayar. But still berat la.

3) If you are bringing your child(ren) along, make sure dorang dalam good mood. Dah makan, dah poo-poo etc. Keep them occupied with activities such as bawa toys yg boleh dimain dalam stroller. Or bagi dorang pegang any book yg dijual kat situ.

Pihak BBW ada menyediakan playground kat second floor, together with little cafe for food and beverages. I didn't go to the second floor, but I can see they have set-up a huge indoor playground for the kids to kill their boredom while the parents do the shopping. I am not sure  it is free entry or need to pay some amount.

Tapi, untuk pastikan anda boleh cari all the books in the list ialah sedikit sukar. Sebab semua buku dah berterabur. Kena cari sendiri. no serial number macam dekat MPH/Popular or library. Buku-buku just diletak atas meja mengikut genre.

5) Boleh view any book that might catch your interest in the their website first before going. But please note, books show in website are very few compare to it's reality in the convention center.

Total buku yang dibeli oleh kami sekeluarga (my little family, my mil and my sil)
buku-buku cerita tu semua mostly mil yg punya. she's collecting for her future retirement tahun depan.

  • Prices ranges as low as RM2 (for notebook/journal),  RM3 (especially for children book), to RM5, RM8, RM10, RM12, RM15, RM20, RM30, RM40 and above depending on book/collection
  • Most of the book ialah hard cover. Memang berbaloi beli.
  • Magazines from overseas (old collection) pun ada
  • Puzzles and Games book pun banyak
  • Yang paling saya suka ialah sticker book for children. Especially yang ada stars and rewards wording on the sticker. Tak sabar nak guna kan pada Ilyaas once he really start learning seriously.
  • Dah lama cari buku mcm tu, sbb kat Perth dulu byk sgt nampak dijual.

They also provide boxes bagi sapa-sapa yg tak bawa carrier utk isi buku masa memilih
and we can wrap the boxes too
Si ikan buntal yang sangat teruja dpt pegi BBWS ni.. like my dream comes true. haha poyo nye:p
with her bored son yg setia dijaga oleh si ayah sepanjang umi pilih buku.

Last but not least, thanks to my husband sebab sudi bawakan saya ke sini...and tolong jaga Ilyaas sepanjang proses pemilihan buku dilakukan.

Nutritionists' Choice Cookbook

Assalamualaikum and Good Morning ...

Salam Hari Isnin buat semua=) Hopefully Isnin ni menjadi permulaan minggu yang baik, produktif and indah buat kita semua.

Hari ni nak share info pasal satu buku resepi masakan untuk baby, toddler and kanak-kanak pre-school. Actually, I heard of this book dah 2-3 bulan. Maybe some of you dah pun baca and memiliki buku ni.

Ok, let me share some of the facts and contents in the book =)

Tajuk/Title: Nutritionists' Choice Cookbook
Terbitan/Published by : Nutrition Society of Malaysia
Jilid 1/Volume 1: Healthy Recipes for your Little Ones
Year of Published: 2011
 The Contents:

Based on the contents, I think it is good enough for mother/parents who enjoy cooking homecook meals for their baby/toddler/pre-schooler. And personally I think I need this book especially when I am running out of idea what to cook for Ilyaas. Pity him , sometime makan benda sama berulang-ulang setiap hari.

This book also good for first time mum, since it shows step by step images on how to cook and make serving better.

From my own experience being a first time mum, giving solid food is one of the most exciting part in your motherhood journey. Well, mak-mak lagi excited kot dari baby. Ramai je mak-mak yang tak sabar2 nak tunggu anak turn 6months untuk bg anak makan first solid food..Including myself la. Here are my stories on serving Ilyaas solid food. Excited sgt sampai bagi process food for first time, tp dah buat reading dulu lah before I decided what to give for the first time...bukan main hentam keromo je.

Ilyaas eating carrot puree when he was 6m old
Boleh baca entry ni

Apart from step-by-step cooking, this book also provide us with tables on what to feed, how to store food, how much to serve and lots more. So, it is very easy la, just in one flip, boleh jumpa all the information needed. But we always have other references skrg ni especially websites on the net. So boleh la kita compare both in the book and also what provided on the net. Yang best sekali pasal buku ni, most of the recipes provided mengikut citarasa tekak orang Malaysia kita ni. Kalau kita google or search kat websites baby, most of them western style. Some of the ingredients kadang-kadang susah nak jumpa kat Malaysia, or sgt mahal. Contohnya Beet Root. heheh. Sekali je sy masak untuk Ilyaas.

This book also comes in both Bahasa Malaysia and English. So easier for all of us to make it as a reference. Yela, sometime, ada ingredients dalam english yang kita tak tau nama in bm, so senang la nak refer to bm recipe on the spot.

Okayla, panjang dah ni. to those yang nak beli hardcopy, boleh beli kat Noli. Harga untuk hardcopy is only RM20 (+ Rm7 for postage). Tolong Noli promote =).

But being me yang ada sgt banyak buku and other reading materials yang pending for my reading, I would prefer to stay with the softcopy version. Yela, there are so many books yang masih berbalut plastic and tersimpan rapi dlm kotak kat rumah, tak sempat nak baca langsung. I don't want to add another one into the group. Lebih baik save dalam external, bila petang2 before balik rumah I can refer and choose what to cook for Ilyaas (and his adik later), insyaAllah.

So, those who is in the same boat with me, you can have your hardcopy from here.

Or kalau susah nak download, can email me directly at fathiyah.jamaludin@yahoo.com , I can send you a copy of it.

Till then, let's have a productive Monday and the rest of the week.

Book Review: A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard

Early of this month, I read one novel. Borrowed from a friend. It was a very good novel, title

A Stolen Life.

Written by Jaycee Lee Dugard.

It was her real experience being captive from the age of 11 years old, until 29 years old by a couple.

During her 18 years of captivating in the backyard, she gave birth to two girls. She got her first child at the age of 14 and second's at 17. She endures all the pains herself, she did not deliver them at hospital but in backyard. something I can't imagine a teenager has to endure. Being delivered a person myself, I think it is so scary for Jaycee.

In this book, Jaycee tells us about how she was treated as a sex slave by her kidnapper. A very mental torturing moment I believe. Weird thing is nobody in the neighborhood realize their (Jaycee and her daughters) existence at the backyard.

The book was amazingly brings me to feel the real feeling of Jaycee for her 18 years being captive by the sex offender. Pity her.

For full story of Jaycee Dugard, please read here.

The Man Who Loved Clowns

I just finished reading this novel. Borrowed from a friend in the office. This book has been on the office table for 3 months and no one pick up to read. I decided to fills in the time while pumping by reading this novel. It was an eye-opening for another chapter of life. I life of a family who has a down-syndrome member.

"Delrita has perfected the art of being invisible. She doesn't have any friends, and that's the way she likes it. If no one notices her, then no one will notice her uncle Punky either. Punky is a grown man with a child's mind. Delrita loves him dearly, and she can't stand to have people making fun of his Down's syndrome. As long as she keeps him a secret, she can stay home and work on her wood carvings without worrying about Punky getting hurt. But when a horrible tragedy strikes, Delrita's quiet life-and Punky's-are changed forever. When you open your hearts to love, then you will see difference things, positive different things. "

Run, Mummy, Run by Cathy Glass : Book Review

Synopsis from Cathy Glass :-
*This is a true story*

When Aisha, 29, an attractive and intelligent Asian woman, meets Mark - charming, handsome and successful, she knows she has met the man of her dreams. After a brief romantic courtship they marry, and Aisha is soon expecting their first child. But there is a sinister side to Mark, which has been hidden, and now starts to emerge.
Aisha returns home from hospital with their baby and Mark flies into a rage and knocks her unconscious. One incident quickly follows another and Aisha finds herself trapped in a highly abusive and violent marriage. With no money, and terrified of what Mark might do, she doesn't want to bring dishonour to her family by admitting what is happening and ask for help.
With two children, desperate, and fearing for her life, Aisha finally seizes an opportunity to stop the abuse for good. Although now free of her abuser she is crucified by guilt, which undermines any chance of happiness, and also her sanity. Only when she discovers Mark's past can she start to come to terms with what she has done and look towards the future.

Puan Cherry's opinion on this novel:-

It gives me different perspective of life. How lucky am I to be grand with a stable life from school years to university years, followed by a career in a very demanding field. Most of all, been married to such a lovely, caring and responsible husband. Reading the novel make me love my husband even more that I can't put myself to understand Aisha's situation being jailed and abusive by her own husband whom she loves too much in the beginning.

From this novel, I learned how strong can a woman particularly a mother can be to stand out for the children. It's a magical that Aisha can raise up again after all she had experiencing during her marriage to Mark. This make me believe the power of family support as Aisha received lots of supports from her parents.

I would recommend all of you to read this novel if you prefer something different from normal love story.

Here is recent update about Aisha if you are interested to know more. It was updated on April 2011.

Mental Note: I think I'm liking Cathy Glass' writing for now as how much I used to like Jodi Piccoult's once before I conceived Ilyaas.

Reading Mood in the air

Hi All,

I'm looking for my writing mood for these past few days. I still can't find it. Maybe it's been grounded due to my current attention to my new novel. (it's not mine, I borrowed from my mother in law).

I'm currently reading Run, Mummy, Run by Cathy Glass.

So, as my reading mood is in the air, I will slow down on writing. I might write this novel review in the next entry. It has been quite a while now that I last wrote about the novel I read. This is because it has been quite a while too I touch a novel.
The urge to find out what will happened to Aisha (the main character in the novel) keep pressing me. Plus seeing hubby reading my anniversary gift to him make me jealous ( I bought him A Dr in the House). I want to read too!

Off to go for today.

ps: Ilyaas is sleeping in his cot next to me now. So I should take the chance to finish my novel.

Handle with care

-my own review-
1) very attractive and sensitive book.it does touch my heart and i believe all other readers.
2) an eye opening to a new situation and understanding
3) a collection worth to have

Synopsis:

When Charlotte and Sean O’Keefe’s daughter, Willow, is born with severe osteogenesis imperfecta, they are devastated – she will suffer hundreds of broken bones as she grows, a lifetime of pain. As the family struggles to make ends meet to cover Willow’s medical expenses, Charlotte thinks she has found an answer. If she files a wrongful birth lawsuit against her ob/gyn for not telling her in advance that her child would be born severely disabled, the monetary payouts might ensure a lifetime of care for Willow. But it means that Charlotte has to get up in a court of law and say in public that she would have terminated the pregnancy if she’d known about the disability in advance – words that her husband can’t abide, that Willow will hear, and that Charlotte cannot reconcile. And the ob/gyn she’s suing isn’t just her physician – it’s her best friend.

Handle With Care explores the knotty tangle of medical ethics and personal morality. When faced with the reality of a fetus who will be disabled, at which point should an OB counsel termination? Should a parent have the right to make that choice? How disabled is TOO disabled? And as a parent, how far would you go to take care of someone you love? Would you alienate the rest of your family? Would you be willing to lie to your friends, to your spouse, to a court? And perhaps most difficult of all – would you admit to yourself that you might not actually be lying?
